Ergonomic without
sacrificing keys or features.

The customizable, low-profile mechanical keyboard with a full function row,
designed for human hands.

Low, low,
low profile.

Matrx is a bare circuit board with low-profile switches and low-profile keycaps. As low as it gets. This design helps limit upward wrist bend, so your hands stay aligned with your forearms.

Less hand
movement.

A split layout on a single board, with straight columns and thumb keys placed where your fingers naturally rest. Frequently used keys belong close to your fingers, so Space, Enter, Backspace and Delete sit under your thumbs or in the middle. You can reach them without moving your hands.

Different
yet familiar.

Better ergonomics shouldn’t mean compromising on the keys you use every day. Matrx keeps F1–F12, the number row and dedicated arrow keys, so you don’t need to learn layers and new key combinations to get started. Your hands get a different arrangement, without rebuilding your workflow.

Mechanical.
Customizable.

Matrx uses hot-swappable Kailh Choc V2 mechanical switches: linear, tactile or clicky, with no soldering needed to swap them. Their MX-compatible stems let you change the keycaps too. Choose QWERTY, AZERTY, French BÉPO or blanks, or bring your own compatible set.

Fully
programmable.

Matrx comes ready to use, with everyday shortcuts already configured. With Vial’s visual interface, you can remap keys, create macros and configure layers without writing code. For deeper customization, you can edit and compile the QMK-based firmware yourself.

Firmware updates are just a USB connection and a file drag-and-drop away.

Also, a dial
and a screen.

The dial controls your volume, or whatever you assign to it. The screen comes with built-in views for volume, CPU usage and laptop battery level. Use the command-line tool on your computer to feed it data or build your own displays. Fully hackable.

Matthieu Napoli

Hi, I’m Matthieu.

I’m an open-source developer, the creator of Bref, and an AWS Hero. My open-source packages have been downloaded over a billion times.

I wanted a low-profile mechanical keyboard with an ergonomic layout, programmable keys and a full function row. So I started building one for myself.

After years of using my homemade Matrx keyboards every day, I’m now working to make Matrx available to others.

More about me
My first handmade Matrx keyboard, with exposed wires connecting the keys to a controller beside it.

My first Matrx was hand soldered (no circuit board) and assembled with a 3D printed case.

A later handmade Matrx keyboard built on a black circuit board, with a refined key layout and no case.

I refined the layout and moved it onto a custom circuit board. Using this keyboard convinced me to leave the case out: the board looks great on its own, and the design is practical for everyday use.

Follow the build.

I’m preparing Matrx for release. I’ll share progress and let you know when it’s ready to order.

FAQ

Is Matrx wired or wireless?

Wired through USB-C. There’s no keyboard battery to charge. The battery view on the screen is for your laptop battery.

Will it work with my computer?

Matrx is designed to work as a standard USB keyboard on macOS, Windows and Linux. The companion tool for screen data is still in development; its supported systems will be confirmed before launch.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The keyboard will come with a working configuration. Vial provides a visual interface for changing keys, macros and layers. Editing the QMK-based firmware is optional.

Which switches and keycaps can I use?

Matrx uses hot-swappable Kailh Choc V2 low-profile switches. Their stems accept MX-compatible keycaps, but the key sizes need to fit this board (i.e. low profile keycaps). A compatibility guide will be available before ordering.

When can I buy one?

Matrx isn’t available to order yet. Pricing, kit options and a launch date will be announced as development progresses.
